The realisation that the new Odsal stadium has to be used for more than just rugby league is a major factor in Bradford Bulls' decision to take over Wakefield RUFC.

Bulls chairman Chris Caisley said today: "We have just received planning permission to develop our Odsal home and will need to utilise the new stadium to the fullest extent, not only on game-days but also for functions, other corporate events etc.

"This deal therefore fits into our long-term strategy for what will be the only modern, purpose-built rugby league-union stadium in the North of England, and the need to get as much use out of and income into the new stadium as possible."

He added: "Further, the last couple of years has illustrated that we can no longer rely purely on rugby league activities to produce further business growth - something which is important for the future of the Bulls moving forward.

The Bulls chairman continued: "We shall move quickly to legal completion and will need to secure the agreement of the RFU to the change of ownership.

"Assuming a favourable response, we will apply our expertise, administration and experience in firstly securing the club's current status.

"The provision of playing resources will be discussed with our coaching and player development staff and accord with their recommendations.

"Moving forward, we shall undertake to secure the continued playing of rugby union at College Grove, even after the Wakefield club moves to the new stadium at Odsal.

"This will be a benefit to rugby in Wakefield and it will also provide a venue for use by our other teams."

Caisley added: "The new Wakefield board will be chaired by myself and will include four members of the Bulls board and two members of the current Wakefield board."
