Cullingworth has gone on-line to the rest of the world thanks to the vision of two residents.

Neil Riley and Umberto Vietri have set up a free access web site to provide locals and those further afield with a unique and constantly updated insight into village life.

Cullingworth Online has information about the primary and secondary schools, parish council, local clubs and societies, as well as updates on Neighbourhood Watch.

It will also provide a notice board for meetings and important village issues, a directory of local services and information about property for sale.

Neil, 31, a computer systems manager with Stage One, in Shipley, who designed the web site, says it is for the whole community and can only grow with input from villagers.

He says: "The initial concept came about a year and a half ago because there was nothing specifically about the village on the net.

"Now that we have got this up and running we don't want this to be a fly-by-night thing - we want this to be something permanent for villagers.

"What we are looking to do is bring the whole community together because community input will build this site and make it more relevant day-by-day.

"We have designed it so that people can easily leave messages on the site and enter up to date information about their clubs and their societies." Umberto, a 35-year-old business lawyer, says: "There's been quite a lot of interest from people who moved away and are now living in Australia and New Zealand.

"We had a man e-mail us who hasn't spoken to his father for 30 years and who was looking to get in touch, so we were able to send him an address.

"There are people who often can't physically get to village meetings and this will give them a chance to keep up with local issues and put their own viewpoints forward.

"It will be of benefit to villagers as well as people coming to Cullingworth who can see what it's all about before moving here."

Neil says the site is still a work in progress and that they hope to develop the children's page and offer local organisations an on-line calendar where they can earmark forthcoming diary dates.

Another idea is to post old photos of Cullingworth on the site.

"We are always looking to raise the profile of the parish council and the interests of the village," says parish councillor Ken Batchelor. "This web site will really emphasise what we are trying to do."
