A family was today set to bury a Bradford pensioner killed in a road traffic accident and her mum who died just five days later.
Audrey Brookes, 74, died after she was hit by a silver Fiat Tempra as she crossed Moore Avenue, Wibsey on Christmas Eve.
Mrs Brookes, of Gregory Crescent, Horton Bank Top, was going back to her car from a newsagent after buying a sympathy card for a family friend who had suffered a bereavement.
Five days after the accident, her mother May Bayfield, who used to live in West Bowling, died suddenly but peacefully at Oakleigh Nursing Home in Clayton.
The family have decided to hold a joint funeral service to commemorate the lives of both women at St Paul's Church in Buttershaw at noon today.
Her son-in-law Neil Klenk, a rugby union player and match secretary at Bradford Salem Rugby Club, said he was at the club when Mrs Brookes died in the accident on Moore Avenue at 4.30pm.
"That card gesture was typical of her. It was a blustery day, she was going back to her car, probably had the umbrella over her head and a gust of wind probably caught her and she was unfortunately hit by a car."
PC Paul Patterson, of Odsal Road Traffic Police, said not many witnesses to the accident had been found so far and he hoped more people would come forward after the festive period.
"The car was travelling towards Wibsey and the lady had stepped out into the path of the vehicle and received multiple injuries which proved fatal. It was raining and very windy and the street lighting was on so it was dark.
"With it being over the Christmas period people might have been going away and didn't want to stop their journey but we are appealing for anybody who saw anything to come forward."
Mrs Brookes's daughters, Paula and Alison, were too upset yesterday to speak about their double loss.
An inquest into Mrs Brookes death has been opened and adjourned by the Bradford Coroner pending further inquiries.
Police are appealing for witnesses to contact PC Patterson on (01274) 376459.
