A RUNNER who took on a 100-mile race across the Himalayas in aid of elderly Aireborough residents has arrived home triumphant.

Retired social worker Hilary Wharam took part in the race to raise money for Aireborough Voluntary Services to the Elderly with Disabilities (better known locally as AVSED).

The race was run in stages, and she completed the course in 29 hours and 31 minutes, collecting trophies and the race's Senior Woman award.

The sponsorship money raised - which has so far reached £1,014 - will go towards AVSED's appeal for a new minibus to help take people on trips.

AVSED hopes to be able to buy the new bus early this year.

Chairman Brian Myers said: "What can I say except a huge 'Well done Hilary!' I think she is incredible and I cannot tell you how much we appreciate her fundraising efforts. It really is quite marvellous."

The AVSED minibus is essential to help transport older people to the organisation's day centres in Guiseley, Yeadon and Rawdon.

Sponsors who have not already paid their sponsorship money are asked to do so as soon as possible.

AVSED is an organisation that provides services to the elderly with disabilities throughout Yeadon, Guiseley, Rawdon and the village of Hawksworth.

For many older people, it is a vital lifeline to the outside world which also provides important support
