A drug addict who was caught burgling a student's flat in the halls of residence at Bradford University has been sent to prison for three years.
Neil Hudson, of no fixed address, was involved in a struggle with trainee teacher Russell McClellan when Mr McClellan disturbed the 32-year-old after he climbed into his room at night through an open window.
Bradford Crown Court heard that Mr McClellan had left the room for a few minutes and when he came back Hudson jumped from behind a door.
Prosecutor Chris Batty said there was a struggle between the men before another student helped detain Hudson.
When the police arrived they recovered a portable CD player, a wallet and a mobile phone from Hudson and he later admitted he had also intended to steal a computer from the room.
Hudson, who also asked for four other burglaries and two offences of handling stolen goods to be taken into consideration, admitted burgling Mr McClellan's room when he appeared before the crown court at the end of November.
Hudson's barrister Claire Murden said he was realistic about what his sentence would be but she asked Judge Robert Taylor to take account of his co-operation with the police.
