WORLD CHAMPION motocycle trials rider has been made an MBE in the New Year honours list.
The Silsden-based champ, who has dominated the sport for the last five years, aims to celebrate with another 'World Double' in 2002.
"It was absolutely fantastic news - it's a great honour," Dougie told the Keighley News.
He began riding motorcycles as a child and began to show the incredible skills when he was a teenager.
But his roller-coaster ride at the top of the sport started five years ago - and once he beat the Spanish riders who had dominated international trials riding, he didn't look back.
He has since won five indoor and five outdoor titles in consecutive years.
Tomorrow (Saturday) he starts the defence of his World Indoor title on home ground at Sheffield Arena.
He first got news that he could be in line for an honour six weeks ago when a letter dropped through the door telling him he had been nominated, and asking if he would be prepared to accept if the nomination was accepted.
"They said it was not certain I would be honoured and told me I would hear nothing more from them.
"The first I knew was when the list was released to the Press on Sunday lunch time and the telephone started ringing.
"It is nice to get this sort of recognition for what I have achieved in the sport, and I hope it will also help raise the profile of trials riding itself," Dougie said.
At times Dougie has appeared to be Britiain's 'forgotten' world champion and one year the BBC did not extend an invitation to their Sports Personality presentation evening, until a barrage of complaints from the world of motorsport brought a change of heart.
"At times it has seemed that people in England have not appreciated what has been acheieved in trials riding, although it is a major sport overseas. But the MBE makes up for all that," Dougie said.
He will have the chance to celebrate with thousands of fans when they pack the Sheffield Arena tomorrow for the first round of the indoor championship which will see the top riders compete in ten events in seven countries.
"Sheffield is always a big night for me, but now I am totally focused on winning," Dougie said.
