CRAVEN residents face a reduction in the numbers of police officers or a steep rise in the police element of their council tax bills.
The number of police officers in North Yorkshire has never been higher - but at the same time the pensions bill for retiring officers is soaring.
Next year's Government grant will not meet the bill and North Yorkshire Police Authority has warned that it has two options - increase the police tax which currently stands at £62 per household per year or reduce the number of police officers.
The household bill for North Yorkshire is below the national average but will have to rise by a third to meet the shortfall.
The police authority is interested in hearing residents' reactions and there is an open meeting at Cononley Village Hall on Thursday at 7pm when the financial position will be explained.
