Two men were being quizzed by detectives today after a young father was shot in the leg by a mystery gunman in a quiet residential street.
The victim, who is in his thirties but who has not been named by police, was hit by a single bullet in his left leg in Thorpe Edge, Bradford, on Saturday night.
Police said his wounds were not life threatening and that he had been helping them with their inquiries from his hospital bed.
According to neighbours, a woman and baby were driven away under police escort from the block of flats on Garsdale Avenue, where the victim lived, following the shooting which happened at 10.20pm.
Yesterday, the street remained sealed off as police investigators combed the area for evidence, pictured.
Detective Inspector George Marshall, of Bradford North CID, said other bullets may have been fired.
He said: "This was a callous attack on a man with a young family. We are pleased that the victim has now been released from hospital but he is continuing to be treated for his injuries.
"The investigation is at a very early stage. At the moment we are just trying to find out what happened and the reasons for it.
"It is a very strange thing to happen in this quiet area which is made up of council and housing association homes. We are making door-to-door inquiries and officers are searching the area."
Neighbours said the area was usually quiet but had seen an upturn in crime over recent months.
They said they believed a gang of teenagers had been using a telephone box, which has now been sealed off, to deal in drugs.
Others reported witnessing a disturbance just prior to the shooting during which a teenage gang tried to force a man to get into their car, but drove off after he ripped a door handle from a parked car and threw it at them.
One man, who is too scared to be named, said: "There is trouble here almost every night. This used to be a peaceful area but now it is common to have stolen cars screaming up and down the road and people hanging around up to no good."
Another neighbour, who lives on Cavendish Road, said: "I am amazed by it. I can't believe it has happened here, most people keep themselves to themselves."
The two men, aged 23 and 19, were being held for questioning at Eccleshill police station following their arrest in the Thorpe Edge area yesterday afternoon.
The shooting is the latest in a series of gun crimes to occur in Bradford in recent months.
Last October mini cab diver Mohammed Basharat was shot dead in cold blood by masked gunman at Little Horton Private Hire where he worked last . No one has been charged with the offence.
In November a 20-year-old man suffered serious injuries when he was shot outside the Planet Venus nightclub in City Road, Bradford.
Last year Safdar Khar was jailed for life for murder after he blasted student Dester Coleman in the back with a 45 calibre handgun during a bloody attack in Manningham in July 2000.
Londoners Edwin Kapoor and Isafahan Qayyum were jailed for a total of 19 year after travelling to Bradford to carry out a 'hit' on shopkeeper Raziq Hussain. Upon their arrest, officers recovered a handgun, revolver and more than 80 rounds of ammunition and CS gas canisters.
Mohamnmed Nazir Azad, who fired a handgun while holding up Patels Jewellers in Horton Grange road was jailed for five years.
