West Bowling face holders Thatto Heath at home after their 30-16 success over Moorends in the opening round of the GMB Union National Cup at Bankfoot CC.

Coach Glenn Barraclough made the opening try when he brought Scott Pendlebury onto a short ball and the stand off made no mistake with a strong run to the posts.

Lee Innes kicked an easy conversion but the lead did not last long when Moorends hoisted a high bomb to the posts and quickly pounced on a fumble for the leveller.

International Innes finished in style when Bowling decided to take a quick tap following a penalty, and his fellow wingman Carl Harrison brought the crowd to its feet with a barnstorming run down the whitewash.

He looked to be well tackled after 20 metres but regained his feet and continued a further 25 to plunge over in the corner to close the half 14-6.

Innes once again proved unstoppable when he brushed aside four defenders on a charge to the sticks for a try he converted himself - but the plucky visitors refused to throw in the towel. Strong runs from both centre Dave Mott and substitute Howard Roberts led to tries and conversion - and suddenly Bowling looked to be in danger at 20-16.

With eight minutes left Bowling substitute-forward Daniel Lang showed devastating pace to power over and a three-man passing move allowed scrum-half Steve Illingworth the chance to side step his way to the whitewash.

Innes deservedly had the last word with the conversion to top another solid performance all round.

Dudley Hill beat Bentley Good Companions for their first win since September.

Hill scored with the first attack from a try by Ronald Wood in the corner.

Then further tries were scored by Richard Bingley (2), Craig Robinson Gareth Shepherd and Williams.

Bentley fought back with two tries to end the half 30-10.

The second half was a much closer affair with Bentley outscoring Hill 10-8. Hill tries by Adams and Neil Shoesmith were replied by two Bentley tries - the last in the 80th minute.

Keighley Albion got their first win of the season but were made to struggle in the National Cup by North West Counties team Heysham Atoms.

Albion looked like world-beaters in the first 20 minutes, running in three tries through Chris Atkins, Andy Parker and Andy Bowness, with Kris Kirk landing the solitary conversion.

But Heysham came back with a converted try to make it 14-6 at the break.

They soon pulled it back to 14-12 to make a game of it and Albion were struggling to gain control of the game.

However, a penalty from Kirk and then a try from the same player ten minutes from time secured victory.

Heysham scored a late consolation in the dying seconds.
