Harrogate Town 2, Farsley Celtic 0: Celtic were reeling from the third minute when Town took the lead in this final qualifying match and though they turned in a solid second half display, they could not muster a comeback.
Martin Haresign's men needed only a draw to finish third in group three of the UniBond Cup round robin table and earn a quarter-final in the President's Cup, but it was Town, who came up on the rails, who will now face Workington in the last eight.
Town, a point clear at the summit of Division One and with four games in hand, were keen to maintain a hold on their last chance of knockout glory - after Saturday's exit from the FA Umbro Trophy - and their desire was apparent.
After taking an early lead they doubled their advantage a little over six minutes from the break and comfortably sat on their two goal cushion throughout the second period.
They opened the scoring after winning an early corner, it was taken short and a cross whipped in from a better angle was met by a close-range header from Craig Elliott.
In the 38th minute Darren Fell raced onto a through-ball and drilled a shot past Celtic keeper Liam Sutcliffe.
The visitors lost top-scorer Chris Newton to injury and made a change at half-time, Scott Metcalf coming on for Tim Smith.
The re-shaping suggested Celtic would get back into the game, but though they created chances for Damien Henderson, Liam Gray and Damien Place, they were still under pressure from a well organised Town.
Sutcliffe was in the thick of the action and but for his excellent form Celtic could have found themselves on the end of a heavier defeat.
