Gareth Whalley will have to wait a bit longer before he can make his first impression on Nicky Law.

The City midfielder is still feeling the effects of the groin injury which has hampered his campaign.

Whalley, who last played against Wimbledon on October 30, admits he is still not quite ready to push for a recall.

Whalley rejoined full training on Monday - but had to duck out yesterday because he was still feeling the problem.

He said: "It's so frustrating but the muscle needs toughening up before I can really start pushing it.

"I've not had an operation or anything, I've just had to rest it and wait for it to get better. It's been a nightmare being out of action for so long. But there's a reserve game next Wednesday and I hope to be back for that."

Law said: "Gareth pulled out again because he is just feeling it slightly and there's no point in rushing him back too quickly.

"But Jamie Lawrence is getting closer and closer. He is getting fit and looks strong in training."

The players have noticed a tougher regime on the practice field and Law said: "It's quite intense and physical and demanding on them mentally as well as physically.

"If we can get them nice and fit and bright, they are going to play better. Saturday will have done them a lot of good.

"It was a test of character when we were losing and they could have either jacked it in or dug in. They did the latter and showed their true colours to win."
