The family of a millowner has asked for his name to be honoured on a new road being built on the site of the former Saw Mill.
A relative of the former Addingham stalwart William Brear has requested that his name be used on a street sign at the new housing development at the Saw Mill.
Addingham parish council had asked residents to forward suggestions for street names at the development.
Mrs Brear wrote to the council, regarding her relative William Brear to see if he could be honoured by having a street named after him.
Mr Brear, she said, provided employment for the people of the
village and served the parish council for many years.
However members of the council felt that the names they had already proposed, Saw Mill Close and Saw Mill Lane were preferable.
Chairman Gordon Campbell said while he respected Mrs Brear's suggestion, he did not want to set a
precedent of naming streets after local people.
Coun Daniel Palmer disagreed: "The Brear family have been in the village for nearly 200 years and the development is being built on
property where their mill actually stood. I'm inclined to agree with them."
The council agreed to send a letter to Mrs Brear, thanking her for her request and suggesting she put
forward the name herself.
