Wibsey 17, Burley 0 - On October 13, only points difference prevented Wibsey from being bottom of Yorkshire Division Six.

They had lost both their league matches at that stage, but then a run of five victories and a draw propelled them up to second place.

Some committee members then suggested that promotion might be coming a year too early for a side that included many players around the age of 20.

A 10-3 defeat in a below-par performance at Pontefract Pythons three weekends ago dropped them to third, but Wibsey coach Ian Gregson made it clear that promotion was still very much the aim after this latest victory.

"Forget what the committee have said. We want to keep our momentum going and we want to win every match," admitted Gregson.

After a string of demotion seasons, Gregson added: "It is not the end of the world if we don't get it, but we want it.

"That would help to encourage old players back and bring new players through so every game is vital as I have a feeling that Pontefract will slip up against somebody other than Knaresborough, who are the leaders.

"Both of us have Knaresborough to play - we have them at home and Pythons have them away - and they are a good side, but they are beatable. All we have to concentrate on though really is winning all our matches, and if we do that we will probably gain promotion."

Burley, who dropped out of Yorkshire Division Four late last season because they had no front-row players and have re-started at the bottom, had first use of the famous slope.

"We contained them well in the first half and played well and they didn't look like scoring a try," said former hooker Gregson.

"We tackled well, kept possession well, cleared our lines well and kept our pattern.

"In the second half we started brightly enough, but somehow we always seem to get distracted.

"One or two things go on and we go off our game-plan and it became very scrappy, and the conditions weren't great either (occasional hail and rain).

"We conceded a string of penalties and somehow we seem to antagonise the referee - perhaps we talk too much - and lose our momentum.

"But in the last ten minutes we got our heads back on. Overall, we should have won by a few more points."

Tries for Wibsey came from left winger Richard Burton, right winger Andy Wilkinson and centre Phil Deacon, full back Andy Todd converting one.
