A pensioner could only watch in horror as car-jackers stole his luxury Lexus car after deliberately crashing into it.

The 72-year-old got out of his vehicle to exchange details after being shunted from behind in a minor accident in Gilstead Lane, Bingley.

As he exchanged insurance details, the pensioner had the keys to his car snatched from his pocket.

The thief then jumped into the Lexus and drove off along Gilstead Lane followed by a second man, driving a stolen Honda Accord.

It is the latest in a string of car thefts where raiders snatch the keys from victims to get their luxury vehicles.

A spokesman for Keighley police said the incident was a simple con trick.

"The Lexus was shunted lightly from behind by a green Honda Accord, which had been stolen earlier from the Bradford north area," he said.

"The man got out to exchange details and while he was engaged in conversation, his ignition keys were taken out of his pocket.

"There was no physical violence used. One of the thieves simply reached into his pocket and took the keys."

One thief drove off in the Lexus and the other man in the Honda.

The robbery was being investigated by a team of officers probing a number of similar crimes in the Bradford district.

This incident was the first in the Keighley division, he added.

The two men, both Asian, struck at 12.25pm on Saturday.

One is described as aged between 20 and 23 years old and about 5ft 7in tall with short neat hair. He was wearing beige coloured clothing.

The second thief was aged between 22 and 25 years, about 5ft 11in tall, of slim build with black hair, short at the sides and sticking up on top. He was smartly dressed.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of either car or information about the suspects is asked to contact Keighley police on 01535 617059.

The Lexus is registered A8 EBB and the Honda M128 WFS.
