A man was killed and a woman was critically injured in two separate crashes last night.

Nicholas Michael Dawson, 30, of Grassington, died at the scene of a collision involving a blue Fiat and a Volvo lorry on the A65 bypass, near the Grassington roundabout at Skipton at about 7.30pm.

Mr Dawson was a front seat passenger in the Fiat.

Three hours later a blue Ford Fiesta, travelling towards Denton, collided with a white Mitsubishi Space Wagon on Keighley Road near Silsden.

A 19-year-old woman suffered head injuries and was today described as being in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Leeds General Infirmary.

Police have also named one of the victims of a head-on collision near York on Sunday night, in which four people died, as Gordon Browne, aged 70, of Newsholme Dean, near Oakworth.

Mr Browne was travelling in a Peugeot car with his wife Hilary, 63. She was taken to York District Hospital suffering from serious injuries after the accident on the B1224 York to Wetherby Road.

Three people, two men aged 20 and 18 and a 16-year-old girl, who were in a Ford Fiesta involved in the accident were also killed.
