Centre Martin Tordoff proved to be West Bowling's match winner, scoring two tries to knock holders Thatto Heath out of the GMB National Cup second round at Bankfoot CC.
Bowling gained sweet revenge for last season's defeat at the hands of Thatto - after a replay - in a top-drawer cup-tie with no holds barred.
The St Helens-based visitors took an early lead with a drop goal but when they interfered at the play of the ball wingman Lee Innes stepped up to slot over the penalty. Both sides used their kicking game to good effect in what became a cat-and-mouse encounter but the deadlock was finally broken when Tordoff powered over following a short pass from fellow centre Mark Dunning to close the half 6-1.
Substitute Shaun Fallon made early pressure tell when he put the powerful Tordoff clear for his second and although Innes failed to convert he soon added a penalty. Bowling's pack, with Lee Hutchinson and Glenn Barraclough to the fore, took control to scupper Thatto's ambitions and pave the way for a well-deserved trip to York Acorn or Wath Brow Hornets in the next round.
Dudley Hill player-coach Chris Robinson was delighted with the performance in their 11-4 win at Bilton Sulleys.
There was no score in the first half but Hill had the upper hand despite playing against the elements. Second-row forward James Haley got the scoreboard ticking with a try and Chris Robinson then added a drop goal. Centre John Exley showed his class when he crossed for what proved to be the decisive score and Robinson was on target.
Robinson said: "We had ten lads on the park who are under 18. We put in a massive team effort and controlled the game to fully deserve the tie." Hill are at home to Oulton Raiders or Eastmoor in round three.
Keighley Albion turned in easily their best performance of the season and were unlucky to lose their National Cup game against First Division Mayfield 18-14.
Ten minutes from time, with the scores at 14-14, Adam Lilley crashed over in the corner. The referee awarded the try then changed his mind saying Lilley had gone into touch.
With five minutes on the clock, under immense pressure, Mayfield scored a breakaway try to win.
Albion had started well when Kris Kirk raced over and add the conversion. Mayfield hit back with two tries before Gwilliam narrowed the margin with two field goals. A try just before the break to the visitors made the score 14-8 at half-time. In the second-half Eddie Billings went over and Kirk converted to level the scores and Albion looked to be on top.
