The top sides in the Pennine League held their own throughout all divisions this weekend.
In the Premier division Clayton gave neighbours Queensbury a real fright before going down 20-14.
'Bury are now two points clear at the top but bottom outfit Clayton took the lead with an early try from Richard Middleton, converted by Mark Schofield.
Substitute-forward Darren Wilkinson kick-started the leaders into action with a try and scrum-half Carl Smith added the extras - but the Villagers ensured a 6-8 half- time lead thanks to a Schofield penalty.
Queensbury edged in front for the first time when full-back Steve Eyles crossed and Smith tagged on the two and centre Mark Gay came off the bench to post another shortly afterwards.
Clayton rallied strongly and old campaigner Keith Trudgill forced his way over the whitewash and Schofield duly converted to set up a rousing finale. Centre Trevor Stead made sure the points came 'Bury's way with a late touchdown.
In the delayed second round Presidents Cup tie, Victoria Rangers lost 30-12 at Westgate Redoubt. The Vic's gave the Premier side a hard tussle and were well in contention at 24-12 when they changed ends thanks to tries from centre Ikram Butt and forward Gareth Barnes. Player-coach Phil Hellewell converted both and led from the front throughout but the Wakefield side had too many big guns in a close second-half. Vic's hooker Ray Greenwood earned the man-of-the-match award for his non-stop tackling display.
In Division Two Queensbury A looked to have leaders Odsal Sedbergh in real trouble with both sides level at 8-8 at the interval. 'Bury posted tries through full-back Andrew Barraclough and hooker Steven Gallagher. Scrum-half Gareth McKinley eased them in front with a drop goal but Sedbergh cut loose in style to race to a 38-9 win which put them two points clear.
Undercliffe played Division Four leaders Elland A off the park for long periods on their visit to Greetland, but lost 14-4 after receiving two yellow cards eventually followed by a red. Elland scored the only try of the first half when Undercliffe were down to twelve men. When they lost another to the sin bin early in the second Elland repeated the dose with a converted try to lead 10-0. Prop Neil Fawcett put them back in contention when he powered over out wide but when Rick Brown received his marching orders Undercliffe's chances went with him.
