A SKATE park for young people in Yeadon is moving closer to reality following a ward councillor's offer to liaise with youth groups.

Aireborough Community Involvement Team is considering giving one of its large grants to fund the creation of facilities around Yeadon Tarn for young people.

The CIT has been seeking groups to come forward and request grants to fund projects it feels would benefit the wider community of Aireborough.

Members of Aireborough Youth Forum attended a meeting of Aireborough CIT last Thursday (January 24) to discuss the skate park idea. However, a skate park project must first be drawn up, before a full application for funding is submitted to the CIT.

CIT board member and ward councillor Graham Latty said he will work with Aireborough Youth Forum over the possibility of putting together a skate park project.

Coun Latty said the as well as applying for a grant from the CIT, any skate park project would also have to look into other sources of funding, such as lottery grants.

A student of Trinity and All Saints College last year carried out a survey of the views of young people in Aireborough. The survey revealed many young people supported the idea of having a skateboarding park, or other recreation facilities.

Members of the CIT suggested improving youth facilities following complaints from residents of gangs of youths drinking on Yeadon parkland.

The CIT has also discussed a number of other grants applications from Aireborough groups.

The next meeting of the CIT will take place at Yeadon Town Hall on March 7.
