Leek Town 0
Guiseley 1
In what was probably the one of the best displays since Neil Parsley became manager Guiseley clinched a semi-final place in the UniBond President's Cup at Harrison Park on Tuesday night.
The only surprise on the night was that the visitors did not win by a bigger margin such was their superiority in the second-half but as with the last home game against Trafford steadier finishing and that little luck were missing.
There was one change with Nicky Hey taking the number ten shirt in place of Kevin Newhouse. For the first 15 minutes Leek pinned Guiseley back in their own half but gradually Guiseley gained in confidence with Hey just failing to connect with Senior's flick.
A sweeping move down the left ended with Ian McLean's cross being met on the volley by Senior with the ball clearing the stand. Andy Shuttleworth's shot then struck Hey before being cleared.
Inbetween Leek created several half chances but to no avail as Guiseley's defence stood resolute and when they did get through goalkeeper John Lamb was always there.
Hey's through ball just failed to reach the unmarked Stuart and Senior was thwarted by the quick reactions of Welsby who dived to smother after good build up play by Cooke, Shuttleworth and Stuart.
Guiseley nearly took the lead that their play had merited when Shuttleworth tapped in Stuart's goalbound cross-cum-shot only for the goal to be disallowed, the Aussie bound player being adjudged off-side.
On the hour Guiseley eventually scored when Senior's shot from just inside the area bounced in front and over 'keeper Welsby to leave him scrambling to stop the ball entering the net but to no avail.
Conceding the goal, and the introduction of two substitutes, stung Leek into action. They launched a series of attacks that culminated in a corner played to the far post being met by a firm header only for Lamb to bring off the save of the match. He arched backwards when going the wrong way to tip the ball over. After that one sensed that this was going to be Guiseley's night.
Senior was just a fraction too late to McLean's cross and headed just over. Welsby then showed lightning reactions to hold a thunderbolt from the same player.
Leek introduced their third substitute and the visitors brought on ace Reserve team goalscorer Lee Reilly for Senior. Reilly made an immediate impact with his pace and jinking runs.
Guiseley hung on for the last ten minutes to record a superb victory that now puts them into the semi-finals with Ashton United, Barrow and the winners of the Altrincham v Gainsborough tie. If Guiseley can reproduce the form they showed in this game then they need fear no one.
l Guiseley are without a game on Saturday but visit Harrogate Town in the West Riding County Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm). On Saturday the Reserves entertain Lancaster City ( 3 pm).
