A team of Bradford volunteers has been awarded a £4,650 National Lottery grant to help record more memories of Bradford's older population.

The Taking Time memory workshops aim to encourage older people, especially those with dementia, to recall, share and preserve their life and memories.

Sarah Hodgson, a support and development worker with the Bradford branch of the Alzheimer's Society, said the project aimed to help anyone with communication or memory problems. "Some people's memories for the recent past is not too good. They get frustrated because they can't recall what they did yesterday, but at the same time they very often have clear memories of a long time ago, particularly when they were young," she said. "And they have a lot of knowledge, so a project like this is pleasurable for the listener as well as the teller."

The group of ten already holds weekly sessions at residential homes in Bradford, Keighley and Ilkley and uses photos and objects from the past to trigger recollections. The extra cash will be used to buy recording equipment and computer scanner as well as fund the expenses of extra volunteers. Long-term plans include drama performances based on stories from the past, and members hope youngsters will now take part.

Taking Time spokeswoman Jane Dale said: "We will now be able to extend our work across the Bradford district to the people who will benefit most. The work we do really makes a difference as well as being great fun for all involved."

Volunteers do not need previous experience, but should be a good listener. Full training and expenses are provided. Call Sarah Hodgson on (01274) 733880.
