COUGAR fans turned out in force to say a big 'thankyou' for ten years of entertainment from Jason Ramshaw.
Former team mate Daryl Powell, who is now head coach of Super League side Leeds Rhinos, brought a team from Headingley to take on the Keighley side. Both teams were determined to entertain and produced some sparkling moments.
The competitive game was a fitting celebration of Jason Ramshaw's Cougar career.
This was no knockabout friendly - a smattering of fringe players on both sides ensured that the match was played at full tilt - each individual keen to press their merits for first team inclusion.
But the star of the show was an established Super League man, Robert Burrow. The Leeds tiny scrum half stole the show with a scintillating second half performance. Two scorching tries and seven goals in all landed him the man of the match award. A 22-point haul and place in dozens of fantasy league teams - he's going to be a great player.
Leeds were just ahead at the break 16-6 reflecting the competitive nature of this contest and it wasn't until Burrow started running at the tiring Cougars defence that the visitors really took control.
They started well with Matthew Gardner going over wide out and it wasn't until the 20th minute that the Cougars got back into this game - a big Phil Stephenson run setting up Ramshaw to score a typical try from a metre out - diving over from acting half. Adam Mitchell converted. Leeds then scored two quick tries through powerhouse centre Chev Walker and Ewan Dowes - the latter converted to make it 16-6 at the interval.
The second half was quite simply the Robert Burrow show. It just seemed like when he wasn't scoring he was setting up tries for his colleagues, aided and abetted by superb stand off prospect Danny McGuire.
Tries followed at regular intervals before the Cougars got back on track. A Chris Robinson 'bomb' was knocked down by 17-year-old Albion man Matt Steel for Karl Smith to pounce first. Then the biggest cheer of the night went to Ramshaw protg Simeon Hoyle. He chipped the Leeds defence, collected, then dummied three defenders to score a confident solo effort that fully showed his potential and made it 40-14.
Leeds had to finish on top through. There was no letting up in this game and further tries to Andy Kirk and McGuire, plus Burrow's final conversion completed the scoring at 50-14.
For Cougar fans this was a far more positive performance than that seen on Sunday. Mick Durham and Craig Morphet worked hard in the pack and youngsters Chance Leake, Adam Mitchell and Steel certainly looked like they wanted victory more than some of those that pulled on a shirt against St Gaudens.
Ramshaw was delighted with the response of local people: "I want to thank everyone who turned up and helped to make it a night to remember. It was great to meet up with many of the friends I have made in my years with the Cougars."
Coach Gary Moorby added: "Rammy is still a marvellous servant for the club both on and off the field. It was very good of Daryl to bring a Leeds side over and both clubs showed we have some very promising young players."
n Keighley's game against Gateshead is to be held on Sunday, February 10.
