A couple who met at the movies are toasting 50 years of happy marriage.

Bill and Dora Tretton, from Lane Ends, Oakworth, celebrate their golden wedding anniversary today.

The couple first met at the Cosy Corner Picture Palace in Low Street, Keighley, in 1946.

Bill, 72, who was raised in Broomhill, says: "I was at the pictures with my friend Dennis Ryder and Dora was with sat behind us with her friend Pat Dible.

"I asked him which one he wanted to go out with and we agreed to go out with whoever was behind us! We used to go out a lot as a foursome and watch stock car racing at venues like Odsal."

The couple were married at Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church in Haworth and Dora, 71, recalls, "We were the first couple he had wed and I remember he tried to marry me on my right hand, then realised his mistake."

Dora was born and raised in County Durham and was five when her family moved to Oakworth.

She worked for Haggas' as a spinner and then went on to work at Johnscraft for 20 years.

Soon after they were married, Bill was called up for military service with the Royal Engineers and served for two and a half years in the jungles of Malaya.

After coming out of the army he worked as a mason bricklayer for Ernest Turner in Keighley, his favourite project being the rebuilding of Cliffe Castle.

The couple are keen gardeners and used to enjoy dancing, but after Bill suffered two recent heart attacks they now enjoy just an odd twirl around Tower Ballroom on visits to Blackpool.

"We've never fallen out, never shouted at each other and we've always enjoyed ourselves," adds Bill.

Bill's brothers Frank and Edward and Dora's sisters Margaret and Pat will join the couple and 70 other friends and family for a celebratory party.
