Haworth has gone blooming crazy for the start of summer.

Keighley firm Magnet has donated six large wooden planters to brighten up the Main Street and Rawdon Road.

The village has also entered the Yorkshire in Bloom competition and, last but not least, a gardening club has started at Haworth Primary school.

At the centre of Haworth's horticultural bonanza is the village's head gardener, Steve Thorpe.

The planters were donated after Steve, 38, phoned Magnet, who said they were only too happy to help.

Steve said: "We used to have some tubs but they all got broken and I wanted to put a bit of colour back for the locals. I know that money is always tight so I decided to go to Magnet to see if they would help.

"They were great, the planters are far beyond my expectations."

And the new floral displays are sure to provide a massive boost for Haworth's chances in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition, due to be judged next week.

The entry is a result of a collaboration between Mike Hutchinson, of the Haworth Traders Association, and gardener Steve.

He said: "This is the first time that we have entered the competition. We will learn from their comments this year and try to improve every year in the future."

Tireless Steve has also begun a gardening club at Haworth Primary school to encourage any potential green fingered pupils.

And the plants that they grow will be used to fill the new planters in the village.
