Runner Rob Grillo is raring to go for the London marathon, only 12 months after doctors warned him that taking part could kill him.

The 33-year-old was told by his doctor he could die if he ran 26 miles after a battery of tests revealed he had an enlarged heart.

But 12 months on Rob, of Oakworth, now has the all clear and is fighting fit. "I had three to four months of tests which didn't show up anything.

"It was a mis-diagnosis, but obviously at the time it was better to be safe than sorry," he said.

Rob, who is head of geography at Greenhead High School in Keighley, is now putting the finishing touches to his marathon preparations by training with his regular companions, Border Collies Fliss and Fly.

They are well used to the schedule, having helped their owner train for numerous half marathons and runs.

"I'll be running the London marathon for Bradford City FC in the Football Clubs Challenge," said the City fan, who last year had a book published on the history of the club called '100 Years On'.

"All 92 Premier and Nationwide League clubs nominate one runner and there is a prize for the first runner to finish from each division," he said.

"Therefore I'm hoping to win the Nationwide division one title for Bradford City!"

Rob, of Bogthorn, who is a member of Keighley and Craven Athletics Club, is hoping to clock a time of two hours 40 minutes, which will be a walk in the park compared to the other challenges he takes on.

"I'm planning a few ultra-long races this year," he said. "I have just done the 31 mile Haworth Hobble and in May I am doing the gruelling 62 mile Fellsman Hike in the Yorkshire Dales, and then a two day mountain marathon in the Scottish Highlands.

"The lads at my club think I'm mad."
