A Keighley-based environmental group has decided to fold after 12 years.

Keighley Friends of the Earth has called it a day after more than a decade of campaigning on local and national green issues.

Spokesman Jane Howie said the decision to call it a day was made after the group successfully lobbied Bradford Council to exclude the use of incinerators in its draft waste plan.

"It is with some sadness that Keighley Friends of the Earth has decided to fold," said Jane.

"With the successful culmination of the Don't Waste Waste campaign, the existence of a very impressive alternative local environmental group and the time constraints of Keighley FoE members, we decided to disband at the last meeting.

"The alternative environmental group is Action for a Sustainable Bradford, and I recommend that anyone interested in the environment should contact them, or set up a new Keighley FoE group." During the last 12 years the group has campaigned on a long line of environmental issues affecting local people.

It objected to the waste landfill site at Manywells Quarry, in Cullingworth, and the proposed landfill at Buck Park Quarry, in Denholme.

It supported Aire Valley Conservation Society, particularly in its opposition to the Bingley bypass.

The group supported the use of wind farms in the Keighley area and called for greater use of alternative energy sources as opposed to nuclear and fossil fuel.

Members also called on local DIY stores to stop selling hard woods sourced from tropical rainforests and lobbied Keighley MP Ann Cryer as part of its campaign against genetically modified foods.

They also staged a successful green action day in Lund Park last year.
