KIGHLEY golf professional Michael Bradley and club member Michael Harrison will be heading to Portugal if they get through the next round of the Lombard Trophy -- Europe's biggest pro-am competition.
Harrison took his first big step towards a five-day trip to the San Lorenzo championship course when he won the club qualifying competition with a nett score of 63. He will be joined by Bradley in the regional final art Sand Moor Golf Club on May 14.
Michael Harrison is a self-employed dry stone waller and lives in Cowling. He has been playing golf for three years and was playing off 15 handicap when he won the tournament, but has since come down a further two shots to13.
Michael Bradley has been the club pro at Keighley for 10 years and qualified for the 1997 Open Championship. Winners of the 16 regional finals will travel to Portugal in September.
n Local knowledge paid off for Skipton pair Peter Mellor and David Hyde as they won the Bradford Winter Alliance on their own course with a nine under par 60 on Wednesday.
Second were Riddlesden's B Hudson and C Woodhouse on 61, two shots clear of Branshaw pair D Hirst and J Marshall and Skipton pairs C Chapman and P Pethybridge and J Ryder and J Hartley.
Skipton assistant professional Ben Mallinson won the pro event with a two under par 67, one ahead of Paul Humpherson from Bingley St Ives.
The last of the off-season competitions was played at Keighley Golf Club on Saturday, when the format was a 4BBB Stableford. Winners were M Clarkson (3) and S Smith (11) with 43 points. Runners up were P Ward (12) and B Ratcliffe (19) with 42 points. Mike Stanley recorded his first hole-in-one at the 212 yard, par three 16th hole.
On Sunday, in a friendly fourball, another hole-in-one was recorded - this time by Ian Houldsworth at the 14th.
On Monday mixed teams of three competed in the Easter Shoot organised by the Social Committee. The format was a full handicap Stableford with the two best point scores to count on each hole and three scores to count on four of the par threes. A team playing to par would therefore score 80 points. The winners with 88 points were Joyce Yates, Ralph Blaidon and Howard Gibson. Runners up with 84 points were Eileen Hughes, Stuart Brook and Geoff Taylor.
On Tuesday the Ladies played the LGU Medal 2. First Division: 1 A Mitchell 82-6-76, 2 P Brook 90-14-76; 2nd Division: 1 S Lund 104-31-73, 2 S Sunderland 110-35-75.
Bingley St Ives - Ladies Section, Easter Stableford, Silver Division: Miss J Aldersley 42pts; Bronze Division: Mrs B Pattison 41pts.
