Businesses in Bradford are being urged to consider a Mediterranean island for trade expansion

Firms are being asked by the Bradford Chamber of Commerce and Industry to consider developing their markets in Malta. The Chamber's Management Services is holding a presentation and buffet lunch on April 18, which will be addressed by Tony Bonnici, the commercial attache of the Maltese High Commission.

David Walsh, chief executive of Crimsonwing, an IT consultancy firm established in Malta in 1998, will outline his company's success and answer questions.

Malcolm Sewell, international services manager, says the island is in a good location, but is sometimes overlooked.

He said: "Malta is at the crossroads between Southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

"It is an ideal platform from which many companies can begin to expand within the euro-med region, particularly North Africa.

"The event will illustrate how companies can use Maltese firms and Malta's strategic linkages and location to penetrate regional markets."

As well as highlighting the benefits of using Malta as a trading hub and marketing base, the seminar will also share wider practical information and experiences of UK companies operating there.

Mike Cartwright, policy executive for the Chamber, added: "Malta has a very diverse economy for its size.

"It's export trade reached more than £3 million in 2000, and its economy has particular strengths in manufacturing, financial services, tourism, transhipment and maritime services.

"The seminar should provide interesting for those who may not have previously considered Malta."

The event, which takes place from 11am to 1pm at the Chamber's offices in Little Germany, will see those attending entered into a prize draw for a return business class ticket to Malta.
