ALMOST full Guiseley Ceme-tery is to be extended into a neighbouring meadow.
The cemetery, on Chevin End Road, will be made larger by almost half its original size giving more room for burials.
At this week's meeting of Leeds City Council's Develo-pment Control Panel West, councillors were told that the original plan sought the extension on three sides of the cemetery, but had been amended to just the southern side.
Despite one letter objecting to the loss of the meadow, councillors accepted that the use of the green belt as a cemetery was acceptable.
Councillors were told that the extension was needed because the cemetery was almost out of space.
At Tuesday's meeting, councillors called for a site visit before deciding on an amended scheme to build 85 houses and flats at the former Bankfield Dye Works in Otley Lane, Yeadon.
The scheme has been opposed by 19 nearby residents, Aireborough MP Paul Truswell and Aireborough Civic Society on the grounds it would mean the loss of employment land and would lead to an increase in traffic in the area.
David Wilson Homes Ltd wants to build the 85 homes around a single access road.
It features a mixture of two, two and a half, and three storey buildings, two public open spaces and pedestrian linkway.
Planning officers have already recommended that the scheme for the former works, closed since January 1999, be approved, but with the condition that contributions be made to off site greenspace provision, affordable housing and education - if required.
Councillors will also visit the site of a proposed residential development by Zammitt Developments Ltd at Henshaw Lane, Yeadon.
The outline application for the site would require the demolition of a number of industrial businesses.
l Plans to use land at Carr Bank Garage, Carr Bank, Otley, for the sale and hire of motor vehicles and caravans was conditionally approved.
Councillors, who visited the site before the meeting, deferred approval to the director of planning for more discussions to take place.
They were concerned about screening of the site and what would be sited where.
l Vodafone Ltd has been given the go ahead to put up a 15 metre high monopole, microwave dish and equipment cabin close to Moorfield Industrial Park, Yeadon.
