WILL Musgrave made his debut for England Under-16s at the European Invitation Hockey Tournament over the Easter weekend and won a silver medal.
The tournament was held at the Belle Vue Hockey Centre, Man-chester, which will be the venue for this summer's Commonwealth Games.
The Burley-in-Wharfedale youngster who plays for Ben Rhydding Hockey Club, was one of the squad of 16 selected for the England team. The first game was against Germany and Will was in the starting line-up.
Just three and a half minutes into the game he scored, sweeping the ball in at the left-hand post. Ninety seconds later a similar move left Will with a more difficult chance. He kept his cool to beat the 'keeper and make it 2-0, surely the stuff dreams are made of!
Germany drew level by half-time but England regained control after the break and Will laid on the third goal for centre-forward Darren Cheeseman to score the first of his two. The final score was 4-3, a great victory for England.
The match against the Netherlands the following day was always going to be the toughest and so it proved. The Dutch were very skillful and quicker than the home side. However, England played well and took the few chances they got to earn a deserved 2-2 draw.
The final pool game against Spain on Sunday was disappointing. England had their chances but could not manage to score. With a last minute scare when Spain got a penalty corner England were happy to have the 0-0 draw which was good enough to take them through to the final.
The final against the Netherlands was even more difficult than the pool match, with the Dutch raising their game to a higher level. England got fewer chances and with two tremendous saves off the line by the Dutch defence it was not going to be England's day.
England had to settle for the silver medal, a fantastic achievement which sets them up for the European Nations Cup to be played at the end of June in Rotterdam.
Results: Spain 1, Netherlands 8; England 4, Germany 3; Germany 4, Spain 2; England 2, Netherlands 2; Germany 1, Netherlands 2; England 0, Spain 0.
Final: England 0, Netherlands 3.
