A brass band has never been given the freedom of a city before, so where better to start than with Black Dyke Mills Band, the most successful band of all time. Their record is unique. Hundreds of holidaymakers from the Keighley and Halifax districts rushed the station barriers at Southport late last night in an attempt to board an excursion train returning to the West Riding. Police were called to restore order and ambulances took away many passengers who had fainted. The train left Keighley on a half day excursion at 11.10 a.m. with over 200 passengers, and at Sowerby Bridge two more coaches were put on. At 9.25 p.m. when it was due to return, hundreds of people crushed through the ticket barriers regardless of collectors and other officials.
