The village of Addingham was stunned this week when a 21-year-old man died after a stabbing incident in a pub car park.

Mark Daniel Webster, a former pupil of Ilkley Grammar School, suffered a stab wound to the chest in a struggle outside the Fleece public house in Main Street, Addingham.

He died on Easter Monday at Airedale General Hospital where a post mortem confirmed that the wound had caused his death.

Two other men were hurt in the car park incident, reportedly while trying to restrain another man, but escaped serious injury.

Officers received the first of a series of calls from alarmed onlookers near the Main Street pub, which had been granted a late licence for a '70s night fancy dress Karaoke, at 1.10am on Easter Monday.

A response team from Keighley arrived shortly afterwards and took Mr Webster to hospital, where he died from his injuries at 2.10am.

Detective Superintendent Phil Sedgwick is leading the investigation from the Incident Room at Keighley Police Station.

He said: "Initially, we just had a report of a fight and responded to that. But since the death we have been interviewing witnesses and carrying out a search of the area for the weapon used.

"We have now recovered a knife which we believe is the weapon involved. There were many witnesses who we have been questioning, but we would be happy to speak to anybody else who saw the incident outside The Fleece."

The Bank Holiday violence stunned the village and left many residents standing out on the streets in disbelief.

Traffic was diverted around a cordoned off section of Main Street as crime scene investigators carried out their examinations under the anxious gaze of passers-by.

Landlord at The Fleece, Ian Minto, said: "There was no bother all night, people were dressed up and it was a great night.

"I was so surprised when I heard what had happened. It was after we had closed and we were clearing up when someone came running into the pub saying Mark had been stabbed.

"Folk tried to resuscitate the boy but it was no good. I just can't understand why it happened."

The Fleece was closed on Monday as a sign of respect, and bunches of flowers laid at the scene. Landlady Bernadette Minto said: "We are all very shocked. This is not something you expect here in Addingham, it is a tragedy. We do feel for the boy's family and his girl friend."

Paul Shaw, of Moor Park Crescent, Addingham, was one of Mr Webster's oldest friends. The 20-year-old had been drinking with him in the pub on Easter Sunday. He said: "Mark was a good lad and I am shocked and upset at what has happened.

"I can't believe he is dead. His girl friend and his parents must all be devastated."

Addingham Parish Council chairman Gordon Campbell summed up the mood. "Everyone is in shock," he said. "This is just not the kind of thing you'd think would happen in Addingham - I can't remember anything as bad as this.

"I knew Mark and he often came for a night out with friends here after he left the village. I know his parents very well, and they will be absolutely gutted.

" This is a real family tragedy as far as the whole village is concerned. He was well known among Addingham's young community and just a good lad."

Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Harry Rowlinson said: "There certainly hasn't been a similar incident in the village in the 23 years I've lived here."

Another local resident, who preferred to stay anonymous, said: "Everybody is absolutely dumbstruck that something like this has happened in our village.

Mr Webster, who lived in the village for many years before his parents, Tim and Val divorced, had been staying with his mother in Norwood, near Otley.

He worked as a barman in the Sun Inn at Norwood, where manager Nicole Huffen said: "He was very, very well liked. He was a fantastic barman and always had everyone in stitches. It's just such a tragedy."
