The champagne is flowing for West Bowling who have been crowned new National Conference Division One champions.

Bowling took the title in style with a 46-16 win over Rochdale Mayfield.

They only needed one point from the game but as expected Bowling turned in a power-packed performance at Lidget Green.

The opening quarter was a real bruising encounter with a flurry of dubious tackles escaping punishment. So it came as no surprise when tempers boiled over.

Bowling prop Lee Hutchinson and Mayfield's second row Tony Hilton were sent off for fighting.

West's full back Peter Simpson opened the scoring when he cleverly backed up to take an inside pass and cross.

Player-coach Glen Barraclough then made the extra man in the line and his pass round the man sent scrum half Steve Illingworth scurrying to the posts with Simpson on target with the extras.

The visitors refused to be daunted and on the stroke of half time, wingman Dennis Morton crossed unopposed at the corner to make the score 10-4.

Simpson posted a penalty on the re-start and centre Mark Dunning used his bulk to force his way over shortly afterwards.

When Mayfield fumbled under pressure, Dunning scooped up the ball and gave substitute forward Nigel Halmshaw a clear run in.

Simpson converted both but when he failed to hold on to a high bomb, Mayfield grabbed the chance of a converted try to close the gap to 24-10.

Dunning scored his second when he appeared to steal the ball in a one to one tackle.

He was then was at the end of a crisp passing move to power in at the corner for his hat-trick.

Their vulnerability under the high kick again proved costly.

They conceded another six-pointer but just when Mayfield thought the end was in sight, giant prop forward Richard Greenwood reappeared from the bench and produced two barnstorming runs for a brace.

Simpson was on target with three of the conversions to complete what was a job well done.
