A landmark church in Bingley has been stripped to its shell.

Demolition workers started emptying Mornington Road Methodist Church, pictured, - once known as The Cathedral of the North - in March and now the roof and rafters have been removed.

Bill Reidy, who runs Bradford demolition company W and S Reidy, said he was happy with the progress.

"We will be putting scaffolding up around the church tower and taking it down piece by piece in the next couple of weeks," he said.

He said the pine roof timbers were being recycled and used to make furniture.

Its pews, gargoyles and stained-glass windows were flown to destinations across the world.

Views on the future of the Victorian Grade II listed building divided the community and, after years of debate, the church was given permission to demolish the building.

Lemmeleg Building Con-tractors of Wakefield will be building a new church, six houses and six flats.
