East Leeds 14
Cougar Cubs Under-16s 19
THE Cubs pulled off a stunning victory in the Grand Final over previously unbeaten East Leeds.
Although Leeds started as favourites it was th4e Cubs who took the game to them from the kick off. Shane Walton went in for the first try, converted by Gareth Holmes, and things became evan better when marco Ferrazzavo powered in under the posts and Holmes added his second conversion.
Shortley before half time the Cubs were cruelly denied a third try by the linesman who ruled a forward pass from 30-yards behind play. This seemed the unsettle the Keighley team who conceded two successive penalties and Leeds added a try to pull back to 12-6 at half time.
Leeds powered down the slope to make it 12-10 but the pressure was eased by a drop goal from Shane Walton and a penalthy by Jason Barnes to sease five points ahead. A defensive mistake allowed Leeds in at the corner to make it 15-14 to set up a nailbiting last five minutes.
The Cubs saved the best till last with Robert Weir shooting through a crowd of players to touch down right on the whistle.
It was impossible to pick a man of the match in a true 17-man game, but the Cubs' forwards must be congratulated for taking on the big Leeds pack enabling the team to play the flowing rugby which made it an incredible night to remember.
