A rioter suffered a broken jaw when he was hit by one of thousands of missiles thrown during last summer's disturbances in Bradford.

Mohammed Naem Raza threw at least a dozen stones at police that evening, but left the scene shortly after 11pm to seek medical treatment.

It was found that he had suffered a hairline fracture of his jaw, prosecutor David Kelly told Bradford Crown Court.

Raza, 21, of Duckworth Lane, Heaton, pleaded guilty to riot and was jailed for five years.

Mr Kelly said Raza was caught on video several times, standing at the front of a hostile crowd and throwing missiles on six occasions.

He was involved for four and a half hours in violent clashes with police in the White Abbey Road area of the city.

He was also seen helping to overturn a stolen car, which was later set alight and pushed towards police lines.

Chris Dunn, mitigating, said that after going to Pakistan to marry, Raza returned to the city in February when his father recognised his photograph in the Telegraph & Argus.

He surrendered himself to the police and was immediately remorseful for what he had done.

"He is as stunned as anybody else as to why he got involved and stayed involved," said Mr Dunn. "He is desperately sorry."

His wife is due to give birth to their first child in November and he would not be there for that, or for the child's "toddling years".

Raza, who had no previous convictions, had "got carried away" during the rioting.

He was still awaiting surgery to repair his jaw, which would involve removing his wisdom teeth.

He had also spent time speaking to youngsters in his community about "peer pressure" and the consequences of behaving as he had done, said Mr Dunn.
