Chris Caisley today claimed the reputation of the sport was on the line as rugby top brass ponder Saints punishment.

The RFL are today waiting to hear from St Helens seeking a formal explanation for the "Mickey Mouse" team selection for last Saturday's game against the Bulls.

Only 12 players were on the pitch for the visitors in the closing minutes as the Bulls rampaged to a record 54-22 win to go top of the table.

The Bradford Bulls chairman was furious that the "arrogant" Saints coach Ian Millward fielded such a weak side ahead of the Challenge Cup Final next week.

"He has decided that two points are less important than resting his players for the final," said Caisley.

"It has short-changed the supporters and devalued the Super League and I would like to think that the powers-that-be will treat this matter very seriously.

"The reputation of the sport is on the line. There have been some strange decisions made by the authorities this season over disciplinary matters.

"I would urge them to do the right thing here to protect the good name of the sport."

St Helens have been advised that the RFL is investigating whether there has been a breach of the bye-laws regarding conduct which is prejudicial to the interests of the game and the fielding of full strength teams.

It is also investigating whether there has also been a breach of the SuperLeague Code of Conduct.

Millward himself is also being investigated for making comments in the media which could have been prejudicial to the interests of the game.
