West Bowling ensured that the post-match presentation of the National Conference Division One Championship trophy was a happy affair by beating Wigan St Judes 24-18 at Shay Lane.
Bowling's wingman Lee Innes slotted over an early penalty when St Judes were penalised for holding while they were in possession, which was soon followed by a cracker of a try from centre Mark Dun-ning, who spiralled from a tackle near the line to plant the ball over the whitewash.
The visitors hit back, obviously determined to make their presence felt, and were rewarded when centre Milton Finney strode over for a converted try to level the scores.
Loose forward Nigel Halmshaw came within inches of scoring a spectacular Bowling effort when he charged through from 30 metres, but a last-ditch tackle meant he was grounded inches short.
Innes was again on target with a penalty when player-coach Glenn Barraclough was punched under the Wigan posts, but a wild pass from scrum half Steve Illingworth was intercepted for a long- range converted effort to put them back in charge at 12-8.
Second-row forward Simon Owen - back to his best after a lean spell - powered onto a short pass, skittled four defenders and twisted over the line. Innes added the extras.
Barraclough brought his tally for the campaign to 15 with his trademark four-metre plunge to the line, which, together with the Innes conversion, eased Bowling to a 20-12 lead.
A comedy of errors under the posts gifted St Judes six points, but wingman Steve Gregory proved it was only a temporary setback by steaming over in the corner for the final points of the match.
Bowling play Featherstone Lions at Lidget Green tonight (6.45) in their final game of what has been the most memorable season in the club's history.
Queensbury A coach Richard Cheney did a 'Millward' when he rested five players from the side that lost 22-20 at home to Heywood Tigers.
With the Pennine Shipley Trophy final in his sights on Monday, May 6, any player with even the slightest of twinges was given the day off.
Wingman Paul Clarke had an impressive run-out in his first game back after a long injury, and forwards Mark Craft and Jimmy Wright booked their final jerseys with outstanding performances in the pack.
'Bury, who were always behind, turned around 12-6 down at half-time, but for long periods in the second half looked capable of securing the two points that would have given them fifth spot in Division Two. Neil Hobson, Kristin Freibach and Danny Holmes scored the tries, all converted by hooker Steven Gallagher, who also added a penalty.
Wyke escaped from the bottom of Division Four with a sparkling 30-16 win over Park Amateurs A at Wyke Manor.
Captain Craig Scott produced a powerful run to open the scoring, but a costly spell of indiscipline meant they conceded three penalties and an unconverted try.
Veteran prop Jason Whomack slipped a sneaky off-load to the willing Scott for his second which, together with a Dave Moffett conversion, levelled the scores at 10-10 at half time. Three try-saving tackles from Darren Barraclough kept Park at bay before Paul Coates crossed for the try, which eased them in front. Danny Sharpe soon followed and Barraclough backed up superbly to put the match beyond doubt.
