A memorial fund for a Bradford man who died from cancer has made a significant donation to the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Can...Cancer Research Appeal.

More than £500 has been given to the life-saving appeal by the Simon Wooller Memorial Fund, set up following the 25-year-old's death in August 1998.

Simon, who lived in Fairweather Green, Bradford, kept the seriousness of his condition from his family in an effort to spare them the worry.

He was told five days before his death he had achieved a first-class honours degree in physiotherapy and was even awarded a prize as the most outstanding student at Bradford University.

His mother, Jean, was touched by the number of messages of sympathy and also donations given in his memory.

In 1998 they gave more than £1,500 to T&A's £1m MRI scanner appeal and since then the family has continued to give money to cancer-related charities.

"We just carried on raising money," said Jean, of Coleridge Gardens, Idle. "It is not big scale but I would like to thank family, friends and colleagues at Provident Financial, without whose help raising funds would not be possible.

"Also my neighbour, Marion Moore, who, at 83, turns out regularly to help me with table top sales. Really cancer research should be the starting point for any fundraising.

"If we can stop cancer in its tracks then we would go a long way."

Bradford Can... aims to raise £1m for cancer research. The money will be spent on pioneering work at the University of Bradford's Cancer Research Unit and also on patient trials of anti-cancer drugs at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Every penny raised will be doubled by Sovereign Healthcare, of Manningham Lane, Bradford. When the target is reached it will trigger a further £5m of funding from Cancer Research UK.
