Stocksbridge 2

GUISELEY blew any last hopes they had of gatecrashing the UniBond League promotion play-offs when they gave an abysmal performance against relegation threatened Stocksbridge on Saturday.

In what was their last home league game of the season, Guiseley hardly created a decent chance and it was the battling Stocksbridge lads who earned the points.

Under pressure in the early stages, Guiseley started to gain some territorial advantage but they were no threat up front where Ryan Senior and Nicky Hey struggled to win possession.

In fact the only time Guiseley looked dan-gerous was in the last five minutes when assistant manager Phil Sharpe came on and won a succession of headers.

Stocksbridge took the lead just on the half hour when the ball fell to Tom Jones 35 yards from goal. He hammered in a low shot that zipped past John Lamb after taking a wicked bounce.

A couple of long range efforts from the lethargic leading scorer Senior and an effort from Peter Sumner were all Guiseley had to show in the first-half.

The crowd were getting restless in the second-half and their misery was compounded when Stocksbridge substitute Russell Green drilled a low ball across the Guiseley area and Paul Jackson beat Lamb with his lob.

The same two teams met in the reverse fixture on Tuesday and again it was Stocksbridge who took the points. Guiseley however gave a better performance in this game but it was marred when player-manager Neil Parsley was stretchered off with a knee injury in the first-half.

Guiseley did not start well and Stocksbridge took a first minute lead.

Senior had an effort saved and Ben Thack-wray had a good chance after 11 minutes. Senior again put his effort wide and Hey had a header saved.

Guiseley knew things were not going to go their way when Simon Trevitt was pushed in the 33rd minute and the penalty appeals were turned down.

In the 37th minute Stocksbridge doubled their lead through Liam Robinson.

In the second-half Ian McLean, who had replaced Parsley, had a shot saved as did Hey.

Mark Stuart then served a lesson to young pretender Senior by converting his 76th minute chance to regain pole position in the leading scorer charts.

Senior had a one-on-one but put his effort wide and then Trevitt hit the bar in the 84th minute to sum up Guiseley's fortunes.

l On Saturday Guiseley travel to Trafford.

Guiseley Reserves 7

Colwyn Bay 1

Guiseley Reserves may well have netted seven times in this game played on Sunday but they should have run up a cricket score. Never has Steve Daykin seen so many chances come and go in his long career but he did manage to nocth two including a spectacular overhead kick.

His fellow striker Paul Gedman was just as wasteful but he too finished with two goals while it took Richard Machell seven attempts before he got on the scoresheet.

Phil Atkinson had opened the scoring and Mark Exley netted the other.

lOn Saturday the Reserves entertain Bamber Bridge and then travel to Rossendale on Tuesday. They then play Northwich Victoria at home on May 4 and Altrincham at home on Tuesday, May 7, to complete their season in the Lancashire League.

lGUISELEY are running their annual junior tournament for teams under-12 and under-10 on Sunday, May 5. The event is open to any teams from clubs, schools etc and anyone interested in taking part should contact Phil Rogerson on 01943-879236.
