A Keighley school is taking steps to combat dehydration among pupils after parents were angered by the withdrawal of school milk.

Parents across Keighley were outraged when a change in Local Education Authority policy meant that children in years three, four, five and six would not receive milk at school after Easter.

As part of the Bradford Healthy School Initiative, Nessfield School is providing all pupils aged seven and upwards with a bottle of water as part of a scheme to combat dehydration in children.

Teacher at Nessfield Primary School Antony Silson said: "Dehydration can result in poor performance, headaches, tiredness and irritability, and the school is keen to promote drinking water.

"This is a Bradford-wide initiative but we are one of the first schools in this area to really grasp the idea and try to make it work.

"The children were provided with a water bottle each on Monday, and it's up to them to either fill it up at home or keep it filled at school.

"They'll have them on their desks throughout the day."

Since the changes in education authority policy, all nursery and reception age children - three and four year olds - have continued to get free milk, along with children eligible for free school meals.
