Yarnbury 19, Keighley 16 - Keighley were bundled out of the Yorkshire Shield in a tense and dramatic finale to this evenly balanced semi-final.

The home side held a 3 point lead at the end of a largely forgettable first half, with stand off Steve Galbraith landing three penalty goals to two for Keighley by Johnny Harrison.

Keighley's ambitions were handicapped by the early loss with a ham string injury of full back Carl Smith, but they made no concessions to Yrnbury's superior league status, with the forwards in particular impressing in the scrums and mauls. Try scoring chances for both sides were rare as both sets of backs struggled to find co-hesion, with Keighley's best moments stemming from a jinking break by Johnny Harrison which faltered five meters out, and some elusive running by wingman John Hinchliffe.

Yambury began the second half more positively, and after Galbraith's penalty goal miss, wingman Braham knocked on with the line at his mercy. The home backs finally matched their potential when influential scrum half Steve Lee made the opening for centre Andy Marshall to cross between the posts, Galbraith converting.

With the game in danger of slipping away from them, Keighley at last found some fluency in attack. The forwards continued to provide a solid platform and firstly full back Warren Knowles and then scrum half Ian Woodwiss were held close to the line, before Knowles rounded the defence on a determined 40 metre run to the corner.

The Keighley pack was inspired to greater effort and after a tremendous 30 metre rolling maul, the ball was released allowing John Hinchliffe to weave his way to the line to tie the scores. A break by flanker Lee Gordon again opened up the Yarnbury defence but they regrouped and, prompted by the impressive No 8 Ian Molle, forced play to the Keighley line. The visitors survived a series of close raids but failed to clear the ball downfield, allowing Yarnbury to maintain the pressure.

Over anxiety led to a penalty award but surprisingly Galbraith was wide with the straight forward attempt.

With only two minutes remaining, Keighley appeared to be heading for the final on a try count, but Yarnbury scraped home when Johnny Harrison's drop out sailed directly into touch and from the ensuing scrum, Galbraith calmly dropped the winning goal.
