A party of pupils and teachers from Tong School, Westgate Hill, Bradford, is leaving the city in June to journey across the Sahara in a Land-Rover. The expedition, which is expected to take a month, was the idea of history teacher, Mr. John Stead, and has taken nearly a year to organise. "I had the idea last summer," said Mr. Stead. "We have had to raise about £1,000 altogether, and we now need about another £400."

Sixteen men, with an average age of about 50, who will form the nucleus from which the city's Home Guard Battalion will be built up, were interviewed at Belle Vue Barracks, yesterday. It was the first day of enrolment for the new Home Guard service, for which over 33,500 men all over the country have volunteered. In Bradford 170 men have submitted application forms, of which about 38 will be selected to form a cadre.
