Two 15 year-old Skyrac athletes, Andrew Staniland and Amy Howard, made their debuts on Sunday in the Pennine Division of the National Junior Athletics League at the Princess Mary Stadium, Cleckheaton.
However, because Skyrac do not have a team in this league for under 20 athletes, Andrew and Amy were representing their second claim clubs, Leeds City AC and Bingley Harriers respectively.
Both had a magnificent afternoon and came home with three personal best performances between them. In the junior men's long jump, Andrew jumped over six metres five times and finished with 6.24m for first place. He then ran 12.3s second place in the B string of the 100m. Both performances were PB's.
Amy's afternoon started well with a personal best of 9.47m in the junior women's shot (4kg) for second place. Then she leapt 4.87m for another second position in the B string long jump, only 6cm off her PB.
However their day finished on a somewhat damp note as wind, rain and sleet spoiled their last events. Nevertheless, Andrew came fourth in the High
Jump with 1.60m and Amy achieved third in the Discus (1kg) with 27.38m.
Next week both revert to competing for Skyrac AC with Amy returning to Cleckheaton for the Northern Women's League Division Two East, and Andrew at Stockport for the Young Athletes' League North West Division One.
The previous day, four Skyrac athletes had taken part in the Sheffield Festival of Athletics Open Graded Meeting at the Don Valley Stadium.
In the Under-17 women's 800m there was a pleasing early season result for 15 year-old Laura Kirk who recorded 2 mins.21.2s for third place. The other three of the club's representatives were from their athletes with learning difficulties and each of them enjoyed some fine performances.
Junior men: Graham Dunham - 6th 100m (12.3s) and 6th 200m (25.3s).
Senior men: Jason Hunt - 14th 100m (12.6s) and 13th 200m (26.5s).
Senior women: Shannelle Smith - 4th 100m (13.5s), 5th 200m (28.9s) and 4th 400m (84.3s).
