WITH both sides keen to get their first win of the season it was to be newcomer Damien Shanahan who turned the tide for Yeadon.

The powerful Aussie showed his all round talents for the Red Laners in the past but this time they were the opposition and he made them pay with a fine innings of 92.

Shanahan had taken over the Yeadon captaincy from Craig Thornton following a players' meeting that day and the former Farsley and Pudsey Congs player was on top form as Yeadon made 194-8 and in the end he was unlucky not to notch a century.

Gary Ramsden, fresh from taking wickets with Yorkshire Seconds, gained the early breakthrough when he had left-hander Neil Elvidge caught at slip form five and Yeadon were 14-1.

Waseem Munawar and Shanahan then set about the bowling. The Aussie had reached the half-century mark out of 94 when Munawar departed to the spin of Asim Munir thanks to a piece of smart stumping from wicketkeeper John Goldthorp.

Shanahan produced some huge hits as he carried the Yeadon score along but Munir changed his line to finally ensnare him for a superb 92.

Some good bowling by teenager Chris Brooke, who had started by bowling Damon Gormley, saw him go on to finish with a fine 4-43 off 13 overs.

Yeadon finished on a challenging 194-8 but aparet from Shanahan only opener Munawar with 32 and Grant Soames with 19 not out showed any real form with the bat.

On the big Yeadon ground the target was always going to be a challenge and Farsley did not help their cause when Ashley Metcalfe, Mark Whitehead and Munir all departed to balls they would normally have clouted out of sight. This time their mis-timed pulls were all caught as Yeadon took advantage with some good fielding.

Metcalfe went for 11 while Munir could not believe he had fallen to the former Farsley pace man Tony Gilks who was having a torrid time of it and was removed after two overs with figures of 1-35.

Farsley were in trouble at 60-3 with John Roper, Craig Thornton and Grant Soames all bowling well. Thornton bowled a miserly 13 overs for just 11 runs and Soames produced four maidens in his seven overs which cost 14 runs.

Ashraf was unluckily given out lbw while wicketkeeper Goldthorp's plucky 22 came to an end when he was given out caught off a visbly bruised and painful elbow.By the time Gormley tried his luck with the ball Farsley had shut up shop with former Rawdon player Craig Hitchenor finishing on 14 not out battling out the last 13 overs with teenager Neil Robinson to gain a hard-fought point while Yeadon deservedly took the cream.

Philliskirk back

for cup tie

In a break with tradition Priestley Cup and Shield matches are to start on a Saturday this season and this Saturday sees Yeadon travelling to Hartshead Moor for their first round game.

There they will meet up with their former overseas player Naeem Khan who has signed for Moor this season.

For the cup Yeadon welcome back Scarborough all-rounder Iain Philliskirk. His return sees young James Todd dropping down to the second team in the only change from last Saturday's team.
