Children in Laycock are campaigning to get a play area in the village.

Eleven year-olds India Carter, who attends South Craven School, and her friend Charlotte Buxton, from Our Lady of Victories School, are fed up with inadequate play facilities in the village.

India explained: "Some people had complained because of the noise of us playing outside in the street.

"It's fair enough, but at the same time there isn't anywhere else for us to go so we just want to get support from people and do something about it."

They decided to collect signatures supporting their bid for a play area.

"We just want a small area with a few swings and somewhere to play football out of people's way," said India.

"Everyone on our road signed the petition and people seem to think it's a really good idea.

"We will write a letter to the council asking them to look into it and include the signatures," she added.

Her neighbour Sylvia Burns said: "I have lived in Laycock since 1969 and there is no-where for children to play and nothing for them to do.

"India and her friend have shown real initiative in trying to change the situation and deserve our support.

"We need something in the area for these kids to do, and if they're prepared to help themselves then we should get behind them and back what they are doing."
