Steeton Primary School is the first school in the Keighley area to achieve Education Bradford's Healthy School Award.

Staff and pupils are delighted with the award, which recognises their commitment to health education.

Accredited by the National Healthy Schools Standard, the award follows months of hard work by the school, assisted by co-ordinator Sheila Appleyard. There are eight strands to the award: citizenship, drugs, personal and social health education, healthy eating, physical activity, safety, emotional health and well being, and sex and relationships education.

Head teacher Chris Newson said: "I'm very thrilled with this award. We have been working on these eight categories for a long time as part of the school's ethos, but it's lovely to get formal recognition for it.

"We try to encourage respect within the school and the notion of being a rounded citizen pervades the curriculum.

"It's a wonderful award and I'm very proud of the children and staff and grateful for the solid support of parents and governors, whose backing is essential."

A portfolio of evidence, including examples of pupils' work and photographs of activities, was submitted.

Liz Ellerton, Education Bradford's National Healthy Schools co-ordinator, said: "The school gave positive feedback on the portfolio. They told me that they knew they had done a lot of this work, but actually seeing it all together really renewed their enthusiasm.

"The award was set up to support the raising of achievement and attainment of all pupils and to support staff well-being."

The school joins four others across the Bradford district which have won the award, and many others are working towards it.
