Young evacuees arrive in Haworth to escape the devastation of German bombs.

This week's scene was a "dress rehearsal" for a re-enactment being staged as part of Haworth's hugely popular 1940s Weekend.

Now in its eighth year, the weekend - organised by Haworth Traders Association - has become the biggest event of its kind in the country.

The largest programme of activities yet is planned for this year's nostalgic extravaganza on May 11 and 12.

Modern-day traffic will give way to 40s-only vehicles in Main Street on the Saturday, when visitors will also be encouraged to join in the spirit of the event and don period costume.

The Home Guard will be out and about from around 10.30am, looking for recruits.

And there will be morale-boosting words of encouragement for the public when Winston Churchill - with bodyguards - will give his famous "We will fight them on the beaches" speech, and Monty will fly in from North Africa to add his support.

The street will be lined with authentic Second World War vehicles, and American GIs will rub shoulders with British Tommies.

The family from television's The 1940s House will also be mingling with the crowds.

Shops, pubs and tearooms will also adopt a period feel.

A highlight of Saturday's programme will be a fly past - at about 3.30pm - of the Battle of Britain Flight, comprising a Spitfire and a Hurricane.

Other attractions will include a children's play area, a visit by Kenny the Clown, and a fire-fighting demonstration.

The day will end with two 1940s dances - at Haworth Community Centre and at Stanbury School's current site in Butt Lane. Tickets - priced £15, including food - will be available at the door.

On the Sunday the evacuees will arrive in Haworth by train at 12.20pm, having been seen off by their tearful parents from Keighley Station at around noon.

The children will be taken by coach to the bottom of Main Street, and will then file up the street on foot.

Other attractions that day will include a demonstration of 1940s dancing, and music from the Mass Pipe Band.
