Keighley 2nd XV 15 Otley 3rd XV 5
After the disappointment of the senior side's exit from the Yorkshire Shield, the 'A' team provided some consolation with a well earned victory over Otley in the semi-final of the Sulzer-Roteq Aire Wharfe Cup. They will now face Bramley Phoenix 1st XV at Keighley in the final on Thursday, 2nd May.
After an evenly matched opening spell, Keighley took the lead on 15 minutes when scrum half Martin Uren's sharp break set young stand off Chris Meehan on a thrilling 40 metre run to the line for a try which he also converted.
Otley responded with a try by No.8 forward Grubb who appeared on the overlap after a shrewd kick by stand off Foster had set up an attack on the Keighley 22 metre line, but a penalty goal by Meehan edged Keighley into a half time 10-5 lead. Keighley's skilful and brave half back pairing of Uren and Meehan were a constant threat to the visitors, and with the added menace of Danny Horne and Matthew Cox outside them, the Otley defence was frequently at full stretch.
In an impressive pack, veterans Martin Whitcombe and hooker Neil Scott worked hard throughout and there were first class contributions from Ieuan Morgan, John Gibson, Peter Schofield and Tim Midgley.
Defences were however, generally on top with Keighley on the whole looking the more likely to score. They pulled further ahead when Schofield snapped up a loose ball from a line out 5 metres from the try line for a well deserved score which gave them the comfort of a ten point lead which they defended defiantly to the final whistle.
