A mum who beat breast cancer - which struck her down when she was pregnant - is aiming to raise £10,000 for a breast care unit.
Corrine Hill, who has undergone a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, is appealing to golfers to help her reach her goal. She has already raised £20,000 for other cancer causes in the past 10 years.
Corrine, who runs The Paper Shop in Skipton with her husband Mike, wants 30 teams of golfers to take part in a fund-raising golf day at Skipton golf club.
Last August, on her daughter Grace's 10th birthday, Mrs Hill pledged that by her own 40th birthday - this August - she would raise the cash for the Airedale General Hospital unit in Steeton.
"Grace's birthday was ten years since I got the disease and I wanted to mark it with something special," said Corrine, "Doctors discovered I had breast cancer when I was pregnant. They induced Grace and then I had six months of surgery which included a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy."
Corrine's mother, Ann Woodhouse of Skipton, had suffered the disease in her 40s and it returned again at about the same time as her daughter was being treated. She has also made a complete recovery. "I didn't want the risk of getting it again so I decided to have my other breast removed," said Corrine, whose husband Mike is a former captain at Skipton Golf Club.
"Because of my family history, I thought the risk of getting the disease again was high, so I took control and had the surgery. My risk is now no higher than any other person in society. It was an easy decision. I didn't want to leave Grace and Mike."
Corrine is now undergoing genetic tests to see what chances the disease has of hitting other members of her family, including her two sisters.
The golf day, which is being sponsored by the Telegraph & Argus, is being held next Monday at Skipton.
Corine has held four other similar days over the last decade and raised £20,000 for equipment at Airedale and for genetic research in Manchester.
She is hoping to attract 30 teams of four, each team paying £160. The top prize for the winning team will be £100 to each player. There are other cash prizes.
She is also running a raffle and the top prize is a weekend for two at any Hanover Hotel in the country.
Anyone interested in taking part should ring Corrine on 01756 793557.
