Artists from across Yorkshire are being invited to create work inspired by Bradford's Capital of Culture bid to go on show in the city.

Bradford's 2008 bid team has joined the Huddersfield-based Culture Company and Yorkshire Arts to commission photographs and new media works on the theme One Landscape, Many Views - the official campaign slogan.

Artworks chosen from the submitted pieces will go on display next spring at Cartwright Hall in Bradford.

At least two of the commissions will go to artists living in Bradford or for those who make its landscape, culture or people their subject.

Nicola Stephenson, artistic director of The Culture Company, said: "The commissions are a fantastic opportunity for artists in the region to develop a new body of work, with a guaranteed and well publicised exhibition and catalogue at the end of it.

Director of Bradford 2008 Paul Brookes said the group did not want to wait until it was short-listed for the title to show how much it valued artists in the region.

"The Photography and New Media Commissions place a spotlight on the talent and creativity which is shaping the cultural face of Yorkshire today, and we are proud to be the inspiration for this year's project," he said.

"Bradford 2008 is also about creating partnerships and I am excited at the prospect of working with two of the most significant cultural forces in Yorkshire and playing a part in the culture of tomorrow."

A panel of judges will make between four and ten commissions, and the final commissioning budget is expected to be around £55,000.

The commissioning period is for seven months from August to February 2003,

Applicants must live or work in Yorkshire.
